Great question. Desi Americans living in America "act," American because they are simply trying to assimilate into the "American," culture. It is the environment that they are around and naturally they tend to adapt to the social and political mannerisms that surrounds them. Now these adaptations might be misconstrued as other forms of racial borrowing that "most Desis" might look at negatively, ergo wearing loose/baggy clothes "like black people," when its really contemporary fashion branching from the Hip hop culture.
Yes, we are from Dacca/Dhaka, but we are living in America thus it causes us to chage or adapt, depending on your euphemistic interpretaion. You cannot be born and bred in an indigenous jungle habitat and apply your understading of the world through Tarzan's eyes to that of residing in a urban city structure.
Great question, now if we can only explain this to our stringent minded elders.
I am from the Dhaka Nawab Family but not a stringent minded elder. When living in a country apart from your own one should try and change ones life to adapt to the society and ways of that country, I do not mean change completly but one must always remember the country of ones or their parents origin. By doing what the Romans do it helps to mingle with the locals and live in harmony. What is the harm in wearing western clothes and keeping up with the trend,it is not forbidden in Islam to wear clothes of ones choice. When I was a young man in Dhaka I used to like wearing clothes that was at that time worn in the US it did not mean I forgot my Culture. Khawjeh Mahmud Ahsunollah
It’s true that we need to adapt to the lifestyle of the country we reside in; however there is a limit of adaptation. One should not forget their culture, tehzeeb and their religion. Sorry to say but our saris in Dhaka are more revealing than pants, shirts or dresses Muslim women wear in USA. Just because its western attire, it doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Not all of DNF has changed. There are families out there that still live together The tradition of arranged marriages is still alive. Men take days off from work go to Jumman Namaz on Friday. Relatives visit each other on Eid
My list can go on and on…what I’m trying to say is along with adapting American lifestyle many families have very well preserved their culture. We haven’t changed as much.
