On December 3, 1971, India, which had provided substantial clandestine aid to the Bangladesh independence movement, launched a massive offensive against West Pakistan. Bhutto traveled to New York City to plead West Pakistan's case before the United Nations, but left in disgust when the Security Council supported Bangladesh's independence and called for a cease-fire.
